Johnny, an orphan born in 1933, (Virgo with moon in Libra), draws his childhood history from files of the Children s Aid of Toronto, and has kept a daily journal for fifty years. His first true family life came in 1955, when he met Bob Miller of the Student Christian Movement, and lived in work camps and Howland House community until he obtained his B.A. (with gold medal) in Sociology.
Lee became a socialist (CCF) and in 1956 toured China as guest of the Communist Youth. He reported this experience to Pierre Trudeau. Then he joined the worker-priest movement, eventually becoming a trade union officer of the I.W.A. (Newfoundland loggers strike) and then C.U.P.E. (Ontario Hydro).
He married a fellow peace activist and sired two children before realizing he was homosexual. After divorce, he became a gay activist. His first gay lover encouraged him to complete his education (at Sussex University). He became a university professor. In 1974 he was the first Canadian professional to go public, on television. In 1975 a Gay Academic Union was founded in his home.
He has authored nine books and about three hundred articles, both academic and popular, especially on topics of romantic love, lovestyles, gay sex, sadomasochism, and gay aging. He has been a pacifist, Quaker and follower of Epicurus for fifty years. His gay live-together partnerships total 32 years of open marriage. He has advertised for partners, screened more than 1200 replies, and arranged blind dates with about 270 men. His hobbies include wilderness canoe/camping, gardening, house renovation, theatre, and sex. He is now dying of untreatable asthma.
